GéNIA’s new single ‘Babylon’ is due for worldwide release on the 13 September 2017

GéNIA’s next single ‘Babylon’ is due to be released on the 13th September worldwide.
To celebrate this, GéNIA will be performing at Caffè Nero BBC Broadcasting House as part of ‘Get Loud’ Campaign for Nordoff Robbins Charity on that day. The show will start at midday, presented by BBC Radio London’s eminent Jo Good, and kindly sponsored by Yamaha.

The name ‘Babylon’ was chosen as a reference  to the advanced ancient civilisation which was repeatedly challenged by being regularly attacked and almost destroyed; however, many times it managed to rebuild itself, each time to a higher level.

GéNIA is hoping that by looking back into the past, her audience can link that period to the challenging times our society is currently experiencing. The single is already available for pre-order and  is a track from her new album ‘Babylon’ which is due to be released later this autumn.

Recorded in the famous pop studio Sleeper Sounds, the recording home for Robbie Williams, Oli Murs and Casabian to name just a few, on their lovely Steinway piano, GéNIA worked with the most wonderful team, starting with six-times Emmy nominee and two time BAFTA winner, executive producer Nigel Heath, producer Hayden Parsey, sound engineer Billy Halliday, pre-mastering team Nigel Heath, Brad Rees and James Ryan with mastering by Cicely Balson at Air Studios, London.

‘Babylon’ will be available worldwide on iTunes, Amazon, Google player, Spotify & Diesel, as well as on many other streaming channels.

You can already pre-view the track on iTunes and hear it live at GéNIA’s show at the BBC Caffè Nero on Wednesday on the 13th at midday. The entrance is free. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Premiere of 22:22 at BFI London: a short film by Charlotte Ginsborg, with GéNIA’s debut as a voice over artist as well as pianist

Still from 22:22

22:22 was commissioned by FLAMIN (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network) and directed by British film director Charlotte Ginsborg with music written for a film by Gabriel Prokofiev and performed by GéNIA combined with the choreography by the Russian choreographer Kirill Burlov. This is also GéNIA’s debut as a voice over artist.

Still from 22:22

The film ’22:22′ paints a vivid portrait of Tom Sietas, a world record in Static Apnea, the ability to hold ones breath under water. The film interweaves underwater photography of the record attempt with a contemporary dance performed to a live piano score. As the tension of the record attempt mounts, the story that links the two activities is revealed through the pianist’s live narration. The film interweaves documentary and fiction to reveal what drives Tom to push his body to such physical extremes; for Tom to deny breath is to find life.

’22:22′ will be shown as part of London Film Festival 2017  with the Premiere on the 14th of October 2017 at the BFI (British Film Institute) at 6:30 pm.

Tickets will go on sale on the 14th of September 2017. Please visit BFI website for booking.

GéNIA gives great performance at Soundcheque event

Soundcheque Ltd recently invited GéNIA to play at one of their annual Christmas events. It was an unusual environment for a classical pianist – buzzing with rock and pop artists! GéNIA’s performance went down like a storm. She is very grateful to Yamaha Pianos who sponsored her performance by providing a beautiful keyboard.

‘It was the first time I played keys. I was a bit unsure about this at first, but the touch was so real and the sound was great. GéNIA and Fashion Designer José Hendo

If GéNIA’s dress caught your eye in the trailer for her latest album, you may be interested to know that it was designed for her, by the multi-award winning José Hendo whose work has featured at Fashion Weeks across the globe.

José Hendo’s work revolves around the principle of sustainable fashion. She does not waste material, and only uses it herself if it is sustainably produced – end-of-line, up-cycled, or organic. As well as remaining ever-conscious of her work’s impact on the environment, José seeks to raise awareness of the environmental effects of the fashion industry herself.

This dress designed for GéNIA, which has a wonderful red complexion, is of a traditional length when viewed from the front, but from behind it carries a shorter more contemporary line. It combines a respect for what we can learn from those before us with recognition of the need to change and evolve – a difficult but essential balance to strike.

The considered approach José Hendo brings to her work complements GéNIA’s own thoughtful style, both in composition and in performance, and brings yet another touch of class to her latest renditions.

GéNIA’s performance of ‘Paganini Jazz’

This video, recorded in September 2014 in Nice, France, is a great opportunity to see and hear GéNIA at her most virtuosic.  Paganini Jazz is a demanding piece, and with a very clear view of the piano keyboard, the video offers a window into how GéNIA approaches this challenge.  For those who want some insight into her technique, this is footage that can be carefully studied.

It is also a chance to hear how GéNIA handles Jazz; something of a departure from both her classical repertoire and her songwriting.  That the answer is ‘very well’ is evident from the way she navigates the contrasting moods of the piece, and manages to maintain such a smooth playing style even in the most up-tempo and dramatic of moments.  It is also evident from the standing ovation she receives at the end of the song!  A dynamic performance full of variety, it is certainly worth a few minutes of your time to investigate.

As well as being an outstanding rendition, GéNIA’s performance was on this occasion in support of UNICEF, and the funds raised from the concert meant that 560 girls throughout Guinéa, Mozambique, Togo, Malaisie and Madagascar received an education for a year.  Good music for a good cause!
