GéNIA's Teaching Biography

Premier Prix GSMD, MMus, LGSM(Dist), PGDipMus(Dist), PGA(Dist), Honours Diploma of Kharkov State Institute of Arts (Ukraine).

“GéNIA is one of the most exciting, dynamic and daring pianists I've met in recent years. Her approach to the development of piano technique and personal development are both highly effective and original, combining the Russian tradition with a modern musical outlook. I recommend her piano course most highly. . . “
Douglas Finch, Head of Keyboard Faculty, Trinity College of Music

'As a pianist, she is in the world-class, technically and musically-amazing for someone of her age. But she is also an excellent teacher as I noticed when I observed her giving young players the fundaments, and more, of technique, and preparing them for performances as soloists or accompanists. She is strict, to the point, but kindly, establishing a sterling rapport with her students. I can wholeheartedly recommend her as a teacher.'
Paul Hamburger, ARCM, FGSM, Hon.RAM

GéNIA has been teaching for over 14 years. Alongside a busy artistic career she undertakes educational work by giving master-classes, seminars, lectures and individual tuition. Amongst GéNIA’s students are piano teachers, music students, adult amateur players and a small number of children.

GéNIA has also taught at Trinity College of Music, Dartington and COMA Summer Schools, De Montfort University (Leicester), Lewis University (Peoria, USA), Californian Association of Piano Teachers (CAPMT) in Los-Angeles and EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association) International Conference 2007 in Warwick University.

One of GéNIA's most popular workshops is "How To Overcome Stage-Fright and Make Adrenaline Work for You" where she utilizes the principles of Piano-Yoga®. When last held at the International Classicalive Fair, Olympia, London it was completely oversubscribed.

Considering music to be as much a philosophy as it is an art, GéNIA created Piano-Yoga®, a multi-dimensional method of piano playing, performing and teaching which provides a holistic approach towards playing the piano while making it a natural and stress-free experience.

GéNIA’s pupils have gone on to become prize-winners at various competitions as well as nominees for music scholarships in various educational establishments in England, including the Westminster and St Marylebone Schools.

Once a year GéNIA holds concerts by her students in St. Cyprian's Church in London. The concerts are open to the public.

GéNIA has been appointed as Artist in Residence at Bauer & Hieber Music, London where she launched a series of Workshops and Masterclasses 2008.

From 2003 - 2006 GéNIA was Artistic Director of Markson Music Centre founded by Markson Pianos where she launched various educational events such as Piano Club and Mind, Body and Piano Series (that consists of lectures, workshops and masterclasses and is based on Piano-Yoga® method).

Teaching System

GéNIA MUSIC

In today’s world of the Internet, every-day use of the telephone and rapid data transmission by broadband communications, everything happens so fast. In every market the choice is so great that this alone puts us under pressure every second of our lives: the constant information overload, millions of things which need constant attention, ongoing automated transactions, quite apart from the sudden changes of environment imposed on us by high-speed air travel.

In spite of all these changes in the outside world, the majority of piano schools are still using systems which were formed fifty or even a hundred years ago.

Although their teaching methods have many established good qualities, this "old school" system sometimes makes it difficult for teachers to communicate with the modern world. GéNIA takes all this into account and offers a system specifically designed for the way people live now.

GéNIA believes that support of individuality and self-confidence are the main keys to success. The primary aim of the method is to make the individual think and feel as an independent and creative artist.

Not only does it concentrate on issues of piano technique, public performance and personal practice, but it also pays significant attention to the whole body-mind processes.

The method teaches its students how to grasp the concept lying behind the music. Through this deep understanding it allows people to become familiar with a musical work and therefore to learn it quicker.

GéNIA’s method pays a lot of attention to whole-body function, as exemplified by Alexander Technique, so that one can develop a piano style that works in conjunction with individual physique, not against it. She believes that the use of the whole body, helps to achieve maximum results with less but more effective work.

For GéNIA the actual Sound is paramount: "People perceive music firstly through the sound and secondly through the concept. Therefore sound itself can have healing qualities". She teaches how to master different qualities of Sound and develop listening technique; how to express your ideas and feeling through the sound by a wide palette of techniques.

GéNIA also helps students develop their pedalling nuances, whereby effective use of both pedals will enable you to expand your coloring technique on the piano. The method not only imparts this knowledge but also teaches how to plan the learning and practising process according to individual needs and circumstances.

The final aim is to empower you with a thorough knowledge of GéNIA MUSIC teaching and show how to operate these skills in a working environment, so you end up becoming an independent and professional artist. By so doing, an entirely new understanding of total technique, the servant of artistic expression, is achieved.

Piano-Yoga®

Piano-Yoga® is a unique method of piano playing, performing and teaching and is designed for all levels pianists. It has been developed by GéNIA and taught be GéNIA only.

Piano-Yoga® radically improves piano playing through using specific techniques that incorporate the holistic personal development and well-being of the player.

See GéNIA's forthcoming Workshops and Masterclasses 2008 at Bauer & Hieber Music, London in the diary or click here to download a brochure (PDF,112 Kb).

This multi-dimensional method combines the fundamentals of Russian piano schools with Eastern philosophies.  It focuses on gearing your piano practice, improving concentration, rapidly building strength in the muscles of the fingers and hands, establishing good posture at the piano, breathwork and visualization exercises.

The method also helps to achieve progress on the piano quicker than through any other traditional methods by providing an organic approach towards piano playing. In fact, for some it also becomes a stress management technique.
To book a lesson or consultation please email GéNIA directly.

Testimonials

“After eight years of formal piano lessons and twelve years of not playing, the idea of starting again made me very nervous.  Based on my previous old school experience, I expected to have to spend months playing scales and technical exercises before being able to enjoy playing to my old standard.  GéNIA’s Piano-Yoga® was a real revelation to me.  In a few months I was already playing a lot of my old repertoire.  I highly recommend Piano-Yoga® to busy people who wish to get the most out of their practice time.”

Aiman Mukanova, Commodities Structurer & Marketer, Standard Bank Plc.

"My ten year-old son had been studying the piano for two years before he started a weekly lesson with GéNIA. After only six weeks his performance was transformed. A few weeks later he gave a short recital at his school and received an unprecedented standing ovation from staff and pupils."

Max Gammon, Private Medical Consultant

"Piano-Yoga® helped me release tension, and simply concentrate on playing the piano. GéNIA's approach to tuition makes practice a pleasure."

Jamie Telford, Composer

"In supporting and participating in GéNIA's masterclasses I can vouchsafe for her passion and commitment to piano teaching and performance at the highest level. GéNIA is an outstanding and versatile musician with a warm engaging personality. As a coach, her sense of humour and enthusiasm encourages participation and response inspiring confidence at what ever stage of playing. Allowing students to feel relaxed is part of her magic along with focus and imaginative interpretation; bringing out the best in them with consummate patience and skill. "
Simon Markson, managing director of Markson Pianos

“I have been a visiting student at the Guildhall School of Music for many years and one of my piano teachers after the Guildhall was a pupil of Vlado Perlmuter; more recently I have been studying with some outstanding cello teachers. However GéNIA is absolutely the finest teacher of any musical instrument I have encountered in 60 years.

GéNIA makes absolutely clear the hierarchical relationship between mental processes, bodily action and artistic effect. Her strong interest in Yoga over recent years has added a further dimension to her ability to inspire pupils through a deeper understanding of how sound is controlled, freely and without pain or strain, at the keyboard."

Michael Bird, Retired publisher

Piano-Yoga® exercises have helped me develop strength and flexibility in my fingers, which is essential for beginners like me”

Julius Beltrame, Director of Operations, Europe Telecommunication Systems Ltd.

My students are performing soon and I would love to know a list of the "good and bad" food choices for performance. Also, please let me know when your book comes out. I loved your presentation. Everything made so much sense.  Thanks again.

Denise Apodaca, Piano Teacher, USA
