Beyond the Piano: My Journey with Piano-Yoga® and Wellbeing

After a wonderfully busy spring of performances and musical projects, I recently turned my attention to something rather different — but something that has been very close to my heart for many years: Piano-Yoga®.

Alongside my life as a concert pianist and composer, wellbeing has always been an important part of who I am. I am a qualified yoga teacher, and over many years I have explored how our physical and emotional wellbeing affects the way we practise, perform and experience music. Piano-Yoga® grew out of this journey, bringing together my classical piano training with yoga, movement, breathing and a more holistic approach to being a musician.
It has been wonderful to see this work receiving renewed attention. Most recently, I was invited by Pianist magazine to talk about Piano-Yoga® in depth with editor Erica Worth for The Pianist Podcast. We discussed why I created the method, the relationship between the body and piano technique, healthy playing, practice, performance, and the many ways our physical wellbeing can influence our music-making.
I have also recently written an article for Pianist magazine, exploring Piano-Yoga® and its approach to healthy, sustainable piano playing.
So, if you have followed me principally through my recordings, compositions and concerts and have ever wondered, “What exactly is Piano-Yoga®?”, this is a lovely opportunity to discover another part of my work.
Piano-Yoga® Retreats
One of the developments I am particularly excited about is our new series of Piano-Yoga® retreats — immersive days where music, learning and wellbeing come together.
Our next retreat takes place at beautiful Cowslip Meadows in Leicestershire, just around an hour by train from London. It is suitable for pianists from late beginner level — anyone comfortable reading music — through to advanced players.
Much of our work goes beyond repertoire and explores things that affect every pianist: establishing healthy posture, working with the spine, releasing tension in the back and body, and using Piano-Yoga® techniques to help combat performance nerves.
This time, partners and friends who don’t play the piano are very welcome too. So if you have a pianist in your life — or know someone who might enjoy this experience — please bring them along or spread the word!
Throughout the day we will play music, work with the body, enjoy lunch and afternoon tea together, and have time for insightful, deeper conversations that we rarely have in the rush of everyday life. I’ll also be sharing some of my own music during the day, bringing the performance and wellbeing sides of my work together.
Non-pianist guests can join our wellbeing sessions and, while the piano sessions are taking place, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, walks, sauna and hot tubs, or book a massage or treatment.
It is a day to learn, play, restore and connect — whether you come as a pianist or accompany someone who is.
